Markets, big and small, are one of the best ways to bring sustainably produced local food to people at affordable prices. Exeter has a very limited offer regarding markets and stalls offering local food, with just one short farmers market on Thursday mornings.
Food Exeter would like Exeter City Council to support a move to having more city centre and neighbourhood markets, stall and ‘pop ups’, and to agree to develop a modern city centre market place, as a really attractive space, hosting not only a proper market, but space for other events too.
We have investigated the possibility of supporting neighbourhood food ‘mini-markets’ by partnering any local organisation with the right space to hold such a market – a business, a community centre or a school for example. There is interest in this idea but it needs a small amount of funding to cover the time needed for someone to work with the hosting organisation and line up the small local producers.
